Aaron Rai Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster final round of competition.
The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the victory, echoing his only previous tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Final Round Excitement
The champion started the last day with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Climax
This set up a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even better individual. To compete alongside him the last two days was really special,” stated Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
